How to Apply

  1. Obtain a Personal Indentification Number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education at www.pin.ed.gov if you don't already have one.
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on line in English or Spanish.
  3. Enter NIU's school code - 001737.
  4. New for the 2008-2009 academic year, students and families wishing to complete a paper FAFSA (in English or Spanish) can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center toll free at
    1-800-433-3243, or download the PDF version here. Paper FAFSA's will no longer be provided to schools or public agencies for distribution.
  5. Complete the Entrance Interview and Master Promissory Note (MPN) if you are a first time borrower who plans to request a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
  6. Check your NIU Z-ID e-mail often for important notices from the Financial Aid Office regarding your application.

Summer 2008 Application Process (Summer IVF)

  1. If you have not already done so, complete the steps listed in the How to Apply section above.
  2. Complete the Summer 2008 Financial Aid Application (pdf) online, (Adobe Reader 8 is required) and print and sign the form (original signature required). Submit the form to the Student Financial Aid Office.

  3. If you wish to request a Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) and/or alternative loan, you must first contact your lender.
  4. Check your NIU Z-ID e-mail often for important notices from the Financial Aid Office regarding your application.
