How to Apply
- Obtain a Personal Indentification Number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education at www.pin.ed.gov if you don't already have one.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on line in English or Spanish.
- Enter NIU's school code - 001737.
- New for the 2008-2009 academic year, students and families wishing to complete a paper FAFSA (in English or Spanish) can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center toll free at
1-800-433-3243, or download the PDF version here. Paper FAFSA's will no longer be provided to schools or public agencies for distribution.
- Complete the Entrance Interview and Master Promissory Note (MPN) if you are a first time borrower who plans to request a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
- Check your NIU Z-ID e-mail often for important notices from the Financial Aid Office regarding your application.

- If you have not already done so, complete the steps listed in the How to Apply section above.
- Complete the Summer 2008 Financial Aid Application (pdf) online, (Adobe Reader 8 is required) and print and sign the form (original signature required). Submit the form to the Student Financial Aid Office.

- If you wish to request a Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) and/or alternative loan, you must first contact your lender.
- Check your NIU Z-ID e-mail often for important notices from the Financial Aid Office regarding your application.
