A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is required by first-time borrowers from the Department of Education once the Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan has been processed by NIU. The MPN for Federal Direct Stafford Loans is valid for 10 years.
The MPN is also required by parents who borrow Federal Direct Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). The Federal PLUS Loan MPN is required each time a PLUS loan is borrowed.
The Department of Education (Direct Loans) must receive the MPN signed by you before it will disburse funds to NIU. For Direct Loans visit the Department of Education's website and submit your MPN on-line.
Verify that all the pre-printed information on your MPN is correct and fill in any blanks. Make sure to keep a copy of your MPN before submitting it.
